THE INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM
The Intensive English Program (IEP) offers high-quality classes in English for international students.
It prepares students to enter American colleges and universities and helps them to
improve their English skills for other purposes such as business, TOEFL preparation, further study in their own
countries, and general communication.
THE FACULTY
The IEP instructors are highly qualified professionals whose training and experience have well prepared
them for their current positions. All instructors hold Master of Arts degrees (or equivalents). The staff includes
a faculty member who works with students on immigration requirements, visas, school problems, housing,
and personal needs. The faculty member refers students to academic counselors when necessary.
THE CURRICULUM
Coursework integrates content and skills while preparing students for the demands of
college and university work. Within the skill areas of grammar, reading, writing, speaking/listening/pronunciation,
students study current events, literature and American culture and history. In addition, students are prepared
for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and for further study. They learn how to use a college library,
take lecture notes, write essays, keep journals and reading logs, and give speeches.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
Students participate in field trips each semester. These trips are related to the coursework but
are also excellent opportunities for students to learn more about special features of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Other events in which the students participate include a Holiday party, Thanksgiving dinner, games day,Valentine's
Party, Halloween celebration, and class play.
THE STUDENTS
IEP students come from many different countries. Many are foreign students, but some are California
residents who want the benefits of this small, high-quality academic program. While on campus, students are required
to speak English.
CERTIFICATES
Certificates of attendance and completion are awarded to qualifying students at the end of the program.
At midterm and at semester's end, students are given written evaluation reports. Instructors also write letters
of recommendation for individual students upon request.
FURTHER STUDY
Students who successfully complete the IEP or attain a TOEFL score of 500 may apply for credit classes
at the College of Marin. An institutional TOEFL is given in the last week of the semester for those interested
in applying. The college offers a course of study leading to a two-year degree (A.A. or A.S.) and classes which
transfer to a four-year college or university. Students who wish to attend other colleges or universities are given
advice and assistance.
HOUSING
All students attending the College of Marin are responsible for arranging their own housing. The
IEP provides information on independent agencies that offer homestays with American families.
HEALTH REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Students must purchase medical insurance from the college, which covers them in the U.S. Information
is in the application for international students. A recent tuberculosis test is required. Free testing will take
place in the Student Health Center for those who need it.
