Accent Reduction and Presentation Skills: Professional Development
Professionals whose first language is not English must improve their communication skills to
stay or move up in their careers. Everyday communication includes speaking to colleagues individually, giving formal
group presentations, and explaining important subjects informally. This six-week course has two parts: accent reduction
and presentation skills. To work on accent reduction, we will focus on changes that can most improve a person's
speech: sentence and question intonation, grouping words, emphasizing words, plurals, third person, possessives,
contractions, voice and voiceless consonants, distinguishing "l" and "r," final "ing"
and final consonant sounds. To work on presentation skills, you will choose a topic, gather information, organize
the information and present a speech. Bring a five-minute presentation to the first class and a one-page recording
of a text of your choice for the class to analyze.
The recommended text, English Pronunciation Made Simple, Paulette Dale, Lillian Poms, Longman, 2005, will be available in class.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Test Preparation
Most colleges and universities require a TOEFL test for admission of non-native English speakers.
In this course we will look at sample copies of both the Institutional (Paper) TOEFL and the TOEFL IBT. We will
also practice the skills needed for the TOEFL IBT using a preparation book. The Institutional TOEFL has three parts:
Listening, Structure and Written Expression and Reading. The TOEFL IBT has four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing
and Speaking. It combines the skills. Both tests are intended for intermediate to advanced students who want to
improve their accuracy and test-taking skills.
Class text: Northstar, Building Skills for the TOEFL iBT, Helen S. Solorzano, ISBN 013198578-7.
